Golden Book Chapel

THE GOLDEN BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE

This great Cathedral was built by the people of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.

On the day the Cathedral was opened, Norman Creswell, a local newspaper Editor, told how they did it:

‘They did it by touting the streets and pubs and knocking on doors like their own.
They did it, bless ‘em, by giving when they had so little to give.

They did it with dolls and with raffle tickets; they did it with pools and bingo;
They did it with socials, and tired old men standing outside churches in the wet with a bit of a box in their hands.

They did it with silver paper and tuppenny legacies;
They did it with cigarettes and Green Shield stamps;
They did it with old newspapers and wedding rings;
With treasured heirlooms and bits of this and that.

They did it. And today is their day.´

For the past seventy years lovers of this House of God have been giving towards the cost of the Cathedral, asking a remembrance at the altar for the members of their families, their friends and themselves.

Nearly 500,000 are now inscribed in the Golden Book of Remembrance.

Each of them is included in the intention of a Mass offered in the Cathedral on the first Friday of every month. Each donor receives a certificate telling the number at which the sponsored name is entered. For each entry an offering of £10 is requested.

Donations are also welcome for the Lady Chapel, and St Joseph´s Chapel, and one name will be inscribed in the Book of Mary or the Book of St Joseph for each £5 received for these purposes. Masses are said throughout the year specifically for these donors.

All benefactors are also remembered in a weekly Mass in the Cathedral, and donors of £100 have further individual Foundation Masses offered annually for 25 years for their intentions.

We invite you to add your name or the names of those you love to our lists of benefactors.
