THE BLESSED SACRAMENT CHAPEL

The mood of this Chapel, in which the Blessed Sacrament is reserved, is of recollection, quietness and seclusion, even of mystery, but also of glory. This is the largest of the peripheral chapels and it is lit by two large triangular windows casting light on the altar. It is in this chapel that Mass is said daily.

The tabernacle which houses the Sacrament is recessed in the rear wall and is surmounted by a large abstract painted reredos. The tabernacle is richly ornamented in gilt metal glass and enamel: the centre door symbolises the glory of God by representing the heavens and constellations, the doors on either side symbolise the Eucharist and depict the chalice and the host. The matching designs of the windows, the tabernacle and the reredos are by Ceri Richards (1903-1971).

The bronze figure to the left of the tabernacle represents the Risen Christ and is the work of Liverpool sculptor Arthur Dooley (1929-1994).

The great rear wall of this chapel faced in limestone forms the background to the external open-air altar, which overlooks the piazza roof of the Crypt on the north side of the Cathedral.
