Christmas and New Year

Happy Christmas       Joyeux noel      Feliz natal     god jul

This last week has been one social whirl swapping from bag packing in Marks and Spencer’s, our Cathedral Christmas Party, presenting the Carol Concert at the Philharmonic and slowly turning blue with the cold for the Messiah concert on Sunday. It has been a varied and joyful lead up to the celebration of Christmas 2009. Many thanks to all who have planned and helped at these various events. Many thanks to all the staff for their hard work and dedication throughout what has been a very busy period of the year.

There will be just the one Mass on Boxing Day at 10am in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Please note that there is no evening Vigil Mass on Boxing Day (Saturday) nor confessions but the Sunday Mass times on the 27th are as normal. There will be just one Mass each day at 10am for the rest of Christmas week and New Year’s Day.

I hope our celebrations of Christmas will be joyful, dignified and reflect the grace of the Lord’s birth. All that remains is for me to wish you and your families a very Happy and Blessed Christmas and New Year from all of the clergy and staff at the Cathedral.

This is a short piece entitled ‘Christmas Begins’ by Howard Thurman

When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with the flocks’
Then the work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost to heal those broken in spirit’
To feed the hungry, To release the oppressed,
To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among peoples,
To make a little music with the heart….
And to radiate the Light of Christ,
Every day, in every way, in all that we do and all that we say.
Then the work of Christmas begins
