A view of the CathedralPentecost is such an important day for us at this Cathedral. Forty two years ago, on this Feast, the Cathedral was consecrated and twenty seven years ago Pope John Paul 11 visited Liverpool and celebrated Mass within the Cathedral. As well as the tapestry hanging and painting recalling the Pope’s visit and the link with Pentecost there is also a beautiful mosaic within the Unity Chapel depicting the descent of the Holy Spirit upon Our Lady and the Apostles. The music at the Solemn Mass and Evening Prayer today will be led by a combination of the Girls Choir from Leeds Cathedral and our own Girls Choir - a mix of Northern girl power! Please remember in your prayers three young people who will be confirmed today at 11.00am Mass by Archbishop Kelly. They are Sarah Abbot, Fiona Antrobus and Peter McDonnell.

From Monday, 1st June, the Crypt will be open to the general public from 10am-4.00pm (excluding Sundays). Within the Pontifical Hall there a number of new features that should be of interest both to those visiting for the first time and others who have some knowledge of the Crypt and its history. The Treasury exhibition at the far end of the Hall houses a collection of church plate and vestments from Reformation times to the present day and through the changes and developments of the materials and design it charts a history of the Catholic Church through these centuries. I am obviously biased but I think it is a fabulous collection which is superbly displayed. We have just finished completing the final sections of film, this week, for the two screens that are within the middle sections of the Looking down towards the cryptHall. These contain a 20 minute film telling the story from the site being a Workhouse to becoming a House of God. Along with this there are shorter items describing some of the artefacts in the treasury, a walk-through of the Crypt for the times that it is not possible to access all the Halls and a CGI computer generated sequence of images of the Lutyens Cathedral as it would have looked in comparison to the present two Cathedrals and within the Liverpool skyline of today. It would have blocked out any light along Hope Street. There is also a refurbished pictorial display of the details and events in the life of the Crypt and the Cathedral. There is a charge to go down to the Crypt and tickets can be obtained from the Golden Book Office or the Gift Shop. The income from this will offset the considerable set up costs and the ongoing development of the Exhibitions in the Crypt. I am grateful to the Cathedral Guides who will co-ordinate the access to the Crypt.

On Friday ‘The Sixteen’ return to the Cathedral for a concert on at 7.30pm. They are one of the highlights of our annual concert programme and going by the sale of tickets there will be a large audience on the night.

Our Eucharistic Ministers meet on Saturday for their day of Recollection at the Cathedral. As part of this there will be an additional Mass on Saturday at 12midday in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel during which a number of parishioners will be newly commissioned as Eucharistic Ministers and the existing team will make their annual renewal to this Ministry.
