Weekly Record
30th September
The excavation work on the Cathedral site is now about to enter phase 2 this week. This has been marked by the appearance of the largest drilling machine that we have had on site so far. This will (hopefully) get us down to the floor level of the Crypt without too many problems. Elsewhere the other refurbishment works to the external and interior areas of the building are going forward apace. With darkness descending at an earlier stage each week the contractors have rigged up a basic temporary external lighting facility for the next few weekends to at least shed some light on the steps to the Crypt for the safety of those attending evening masses. I was thinking of placing something in a capsule when we reach the deepest point which would be of interest in a few hundred years when/if the area is excavated again. Any suggestions what I should include? The ideas I had were a local paper, diocesan directory, photograph but I’m not sure this would be of much interest to space age man in the future.
One of the major exhibitions for the year of culture ‘The Corbusier Exhibition’ will be held in the newly refurbished Crypt from the Autumn of 2008. It is an international event which is touring around a number of European cities before it is shown here. In preparation for this the Crypt Hall windows will be boarded over with great care from this week. This is a trial to control draughts and temperature in the Hall. Many of the exhibits have to be kept in museum conditions and this will give an opportunity to test this out. The organizers have assured us that the Crypt will look stunning for this exhibition. This on top of all the refurbishment work should be quite something next year.
This Sunday at Choral Evening Prayer there will be a brief ceremony to mark the appointment of the Head and Deputy Head Chorister for the coming year which are two important roles of responsibility within the choir. The Choir Association are holding a ‘Wine and Wisdom’ evening next Saturday 6th October in the Gibberd Room. It is a fun quiz night with food to raise money to support the tours and events that the choir take part in each year.
Friday 4th is Family Fast Day chosen to link with the season of the harvest. The particular theme this year from Cafod is one of real concern for the situation in Zimbabwe. Food supplies are already running short there and with a poor harvest forecast the stocks of food will not last through the year meaning many people will be without food. The funds from Family Fast this year will be directed to helping those in the worst affected areas in Zimbabwe. Please take an envelope and return it with your offerings over the next few weeks.
It has been quite a while since the Archbishop joined us for Sunday Mass due to a hectic schedule. He will be here next Sunday to Preside at the Solemn Mass and at the Mass with people with Disabilities (and to mark Nugent Care’s 40th Anniversary) in the afternoon at 3pm.
