There comes a stage when you feel that you have had enough of preparing and have resigned yourself to just waiting for Christmas to happen. That feeling of resignation hit me last Wednesday when I caught sight of the scaffolding and BBC wagons arriving. After the hundredth flight case of gear was unloaded I became firmly convinced that they must be moving in for good. Christmas is about waiting for an arrival but a crew of 20 BBC men was not what I had in mind!
The blessing and distribution of Christmas candles last week seemed to be appreciated by many of you. We are sorry that we didn’t have enough to go round. We will know better next year. It was a very simple way of linking the meal we have with our loved ones on Christmas Day with the our Cathedral Masses.
The Cathedral will be looking at its best for Christmas apart from the odd scaffolding tower. As well as the crib in the Reconciliation Chapel Sister Anthony and her team have designed a simple and, I think, beautiful display of Mary, Joseph and the child Jesus for the sanctuary. Some young children will process with gifts to place in front of this at the Midnight Mass. Please note the times of Masses for Christmas Day – the Hospital Mass is at 9.30am and there is no evening Mass. Be early if you are coming for 11.30pm Midnight Mass!
There will be just the one Mass on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day at 10.00am in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Mass times for the rest of Christmas week, and the first week in the New Year will be as normal.
I hope our celebrations of Christmas will be joyful, dignified and reflect the grace of the Lord’s birth. All that remains is for me to wish you and your families a very Happy and Blessed Christmas and New Year from all of the clergy and staff at the Cathedral.
P.S. If you are short of a party peace for Christmas dinner you could try singing ‘While shepherds watched’ to ‘On Ilkley moor bar tat’. I’m reliably informed that it can be done!
