The
large Glass ‘Stele’s’ or columns are now fully installed on the
Cathedral Precinct and the bases are in the process of being clad with
granite paving. Once this is complete we will re-open the upper areas
around the Cathedral. I have kept my head down this week in case there
were any strong reactions to them but so far the little comment I have
heard has been all favourable. The press have been anxious to get some
photographs of the glass. It brings you down to earth when you are told
‘we want you in the shot’ and then you realise all they want is a shot
of the back of your head as you walk past. It is probably my best
feature anyway!
Today is Good Shepherd Sunday, the day on which
we are encouraged to pray for clergy and religious and for an increase
in vocations to priesthood and religious life. I have included a prayer
for vocations at the bottom of the column. If anyone is discerning
whether they have a calling to priesthood they should know that
they can speak to any of our Cathedral priests in complete
confidentiality or to the diocesan vocations director, Fr Stephen
Moloney on . On Tuesday at 1.15pm Archbishop Kelly will preside at the
Annual Childrens Good Shepherd Mass in the Cathedral in support of the
work of Nugent Care.
Monday is a Bank Holiday and is ‘Organ Day
‘ in the city. There are recitals at Liverpool Cathedral, St George’s
Hall and from 3-5pm at our Cathedral. I heard Richard, our Cathedral
Organist, and Tim Noon our Director of Music practising part of Holst’s
‘The Planets’ this week when all was quiet so I suspect this to feature
largely on the programme. Four hands and four feet but only one
instrument so I hope they don’t run out of pedals and stops. It sounded
great, though I’m no organ buff, so if you are free in the afternoon
why not come along.
The children of St Nicholas Primary School
are having May Devotions and procession to Our Lady in the Cathedral on
Thursday afternoon from 2-3pm. Not to be outdone by the Music
Department, and their joint recitals, Frs Michael, Andrew and Ian have
all had some part in preparing for this.
Next Saturday there is
a Car Boot Sale, Pilgrimage to Ladyewell, Confirmation Preparation,
Wedding and the beginning of Bishop Tom Williams’ weekend Visitation of
the Cathedral. One of those times when you think ‘I should have taken
Saturday as my day off’. Bishop Tom will speak at all the masses and be
available to speak to people afterwards. He will also be presiding at a
special Ecumenical Choral Evening Prayer on Sunday afternoon at 3pm for
all those who are involved in healthcare and chaplaincy services to our
local hospitals. Being an ardent Evertonian he will not doubt be
rubbing it in about them making it through to the Cup Final.
Lord
God, Is it I, Lord? Are you calling me to a vocation of ministry
in the Church as Priest, Sister, Brother or Deacon? Or if I am
already living out a life’s vocation, are you asking me to help call
others to the ministry of leadership in the Church? We do need
men and women to help lead us as Church, Lord. Speak to us
Lord. Open the minds and hearts of many men and women to live
your word and build your kingdom. Speak to me Lord. Plant
your word within me so that whatever you call me to be or do I may say
yes, here I am Lord.
